An old truth holds steady: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to your boiler, regular maintenance isn’t just about comfort, it’s about safety, efficiency, and avoiding costly repairs when you need heat the most.

Whether you’re scheduling a seasonal check-up or facing a sudden boiler problem, Autumn Air is ready to help. Since 2004, we’ve been trusted by homeowners and businesses across Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock, and throughout the Hudson Valley to keep their heating systems running strong.

What’s Included in Boiler Maintenance

Our comprehensive boiler service ensures your system is operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. During your maintenance appointment, our expert HVAC technicians will:

  • Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, corrosion, or blockages
  • Test and calibrate thermostat controls
  • Check system pressure and water levels
  • Inspect and clean burners and ignition systems
  • Lubricate pumps, fans, and other moving parts
  • Inspect venting and flue systems for proper exhaust
  • Look for leaks or signs of water damage
  • Test safety controls and valves
  • Flush the system if necessary to remove sludge buildup
  • Clean or replace air filters for combi-boilers and hybrid systems

Boilers are complex systems where small issues can quietly turn into major failures. Regular inspections and maintenance help you catch problems early and keep your home comfortable all winter long.

Signs You Need Boiler Service or Repair

Your boiler may not shut down completely when something’s wrong. That’s why it’s important to watch for early warning signs like:

  • Loud banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds – Air in the system, low pressure, or pump failure can all cause odd noises.
  • No heat or hot water – Could indicate a broken diaphragm, failed thermostat, low water levels, or valve issues.
  • Leaks around the boiler – Even small leaks should be addressed quickly to prevent corrosion and dangerous system pressure drops.
  • Frequent on-off cycling – Short-cycling can be a sign of thermostat problems, pressure issues, or a faulty pump.
  • Low boiler pressure – Often caused by leaks, bleeding radiators, or a broken pressure relief valve.
  • Radiators not heating properly – Could point to sludge buildup, air pockets, or circulation issues.
  • Rising energy bills – An inefficient or failing boiler often struggles and burns more fuel than necessary.

If you notice any of these problems, Autumn Air can help. We’ll diagnose the issue quickly and give you honest, realistic options for moving forward.

Types of Boiler Systems We Service

Our technicians are fully trained and equipped to handle maintenance and repairs on all major types of boiler systems, including:

  • Natural gas boilers
  • Oil-fired boilers
  • Propane boilers
  • High-efficiency condensing boilers
  • Steam boilers
  • Combination boilers (providing heat and hot water)
  • From older cast iron models to the latest high-efficiency systems, Autumn Air can service it all.

The Importance of Preventive Boiler Maintenance

Your boiler works hard throughout the Hudson Valley’s long heating season. Skipping maintenance can lead to decreased system efficiency, higher energy bills, increased chances of leaks or malfunction, shorter lifespan, and it can even void your manufacturers’ warrantees.

Annual inspections and tune-ups are the best way to ensure your boiler is ready for whatever the winter throws your way. Plus, it helps keep your family safe from risks like carbon monoxide exposure.

How Do Local Homeowners Heat Their Homes?

Across the Mid-Hudson region, household heating methods vary significantly by county, reflecting a mix of urban infrastructure, rural landscapes, and older housing stock. In Dutchess County, which includes more densely populated areas like Poughkeepsie and Beacon, out of 115,184 total households, the majority (51,978 homes) still rely on fuel oil for heat. Natural gas serves 31,854 households, followed by electric heat or heat pumps in 19,313 homes, propane in 7,891, and smaller numbers using wood (1,919) or coal (60).

In Greene County, a more rural and mountainous region with 18,188 households, fuel oil is also dominant, used in 8,818 homes, while propane heats 3,092 homes and electric heat or heat pumps serve 2,827. Natural gas is less prevalent, reaching only 1,718 households, and wood remains in use for 1,216 homes, reflecting a stronger presence of off-grid or supplemental heating in this area.

Meanwhile, Ulster County, home to towns like Kingston, Saugerties, and New Paltz, has 73,895 households, with fuel oil again leading at 32,856 homes. Natural gas provides heat for 15,649 homes, while 10,211 use electric heat or heat pumps, 9,641 rely on propane, and 3,184 still burn wood. A small number of homes (134) report using coal.
